Test Drive a Used Car: It’s Easier Than You Think

When you inspect and test drive a used car, there are certain things you want to look for.

Most people are stressed when they go to purchase a used car.

Above all, there are so many things that can go wrong.

This may be true, however let’s not think about that anymore.

Relax… and take a deep breath.

Most importantly…

You’re not alone anymore.

We test-drive used cars and know what to look for when purchasing a vehicle. Our auto brokers are professionals and they do this every day.

However, you may be thinking: What if I miss something? How do I make sure I don’t end up with a money pit? What if I make a terrible call? And on… and on.

Do you feel the fear of being ripped off?

Your feelings and fears are all common.

But looking at and driving a car doesn’t have to be intimidating.

It just needs a simple plan.

First, a certified technician must check the vehicle from top to bottom. Their report may show things you didn’t see or think about. We recommend doing a safety inspection on every vehicle.

In a nut shell… here’s how you can stay in control:

Start with a Visual Check:

• Look for the obvious things.
• Is there rust?
• Scratches or mismatched paint?
• Are there leaks under the car?
• Look closely at the paint and see if there’s any overspray or inconsistencies in the color.
• Pop the hood and peek at signs of grime, corrosion, or hasty repairs.
• Don’t forget the tires, either; if worn down unevenly, it could be a sign of poor alignment.

Make the Test Drive Count:

The test drive isn’t just a case of driving around the block.

• Test the brakes and feel how the steering goes and how the car handles when accelerating. (Does the acceleration meet your expectations, and does it have enough get up and go?)
• If you turn off the radio, you may hear clunks, rattles, or that weird whining noise that’s not right.
• Does the driver seat support you, and does it feel comfortable?
• Can you easily reach all the controls?
• Check the vehicle for acceleration and braking. Listen for any strange noises.
• Do the shocks feel like they’re working correctly?
• How does the overall car feel to you?

Ask Questions and Double-Check:

• Ask for maintenance records or a Carfax report. The report will explain any problems the salesperson forgot to mention.
• Is there a history report or records? If the answer is no… that’s a big red flag. And if something doesn’t feel right, don’t buy the vehicle. Walk away…
• Are there any liens on the vehicle?
• How does the car compare to other makes and models?

We understand that when buying a used car, there are many variables to consider. That’s why we recommend contacting our auto brokers, so you don’t have to deal with all the fine details and struggle with the stress and hassle of purchasing your vehicle.

All your frustrations and fears are understandable and something no one wants to experience.
